On higher ground, levitating, 2023 Vera Kox

Location: Rotondes | 3, place des Rotondes

Flags and banners often mark territorial claims and national boundaries. Vera Kox’s flags, on the other hand, depict an imaginary landscape of organic matter woven into industrially patterned ceramic surfaces from the artist’s sculptural repertoire. Lichens, algae, mosses, and fungi are among the first species to grow on bare rock or in inhospitable environments. In some extreme climates such as high mountains and high latitudes, lunar landscapes after volcanic eruptions or nuclear disasters, they represent the only life forms. Some survive in the harsh conditions of deserts, others on the frozen ground of arctic regions, while rising climate issues threaten the survival of an increasingly fragile ecosystem. The four elements of nature – wind, earth, water, and fire – are further echoed within the portrayed imaginary biospheres.

Vera Kox is a german-luxembourgish artist. She has shown her work with institutions and galleries internationally, including Cosar (Düsseldorf), Kunstraum Bethanien (Berlin), Ribot (Milan), Kunstverein Reutlingen, Galleri Opdahl (Stavanger), KINDL Centre for Contemporary art (Berlin), MRAC (Sérignan), Palais d’Iena (Paris) and Mudam Luxembourg, Casino Luxembourg. Kox holds a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London and is based primarily in Berlin and Luxembourg.
