Troop flag, 2023, Sarah Schleich

Location: LUCA  – Luxembourg Center for Architecture | 1, rue de la Tour Jacob

“Men don’t cry. But they should …”

Fascinated by the author Jack Urwin and his book BOYS DON’T CRY where identity and masculinity are thematised, this subject served as the inspiration for Sarah Schleich’s latest series of works. Why are people still judged by stereotypes? Society needs to stop arbitrarily ascribing values to and think gender in a completely new way.

For the exhibition What the flag?!, the artist has specifically addressed the urban infrastructure of her exhibition space, located next to the LUCA building in Clausen. In accordance with her style, the artist created an installation made of copper pipes, which reflects the architectural structure of the city walls located there. A large textile work reminiscent of flags is installed on the custom-built structure.Sarah Schleich lives and works in Luxembourg. She studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. The artist has received scholarships from the Friedrich J.H. Schneider Foundation, Rotary Germany and Cité des Arts in Paris (France). Since 2006 Sarah Schleich has regularly exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. Her works can be found in the collection of the National Museum of History and Art, the Ministry of Economics NRW (Germany) and the Ministry of Culture in Luxembourg.
