‘Drapeaux, Drapés’, 2017, Thomas Bernardet

For the project “What the flag”, TB selected from his photographic archive a series of 3 “working documents” to be made into flags. This choice is underlaid by a focus on the materiality of the flag as cloth, and on drapery as its natural rest position.

Meta-flags: when pulled taut by the wind, the flags display images of slack, draped material. The flag, with all its associations of honour and pride, is used here as a medium for documentation of different draped effects found in poor materials, which contrast with the nobility of draped flags and cloth as depicted in painting.
