De Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Michael Kargl (1975, Hall, Tyrol)werkt vaak met (computer-) systemen die beelden abstraheren of samenstellen. Voor deze vlag heeft hij het beeld van het wapen van Heerlen in een beeldbewerkingsprogramma geopend en hiervan de histogram genomen. Deze histogram is een abstract beeld wat de opbouw van de kleurwaarden weergeeft. Met deze handeling wordt de waarde van het originele beeld en de abstractie bevraagd en geherwaardeerd. Het beeld als in de afbeelding van het wapen maar ook het beeld als in; het wapen van Heerlen met al haar connotaties en betekenissen.
Michael Kargl is een onderzoeker en kunstenaar die in Wenen woont. Van 2016 tot 2020 deed hij zijn artistiek PhD onderzoek over het onderwerp performatieve materialiteit aan de Universiteit voor Toegepaste Kunsten Wenen. In dezelfde periode was hij artistiek onderzoeker en co-leider van het project “originalcopy-Post-Digital Strategies of Appropriation”. Hij was medeoprichter en lid van het collectief CONT3XT.NET (2006-2012).

The Austrian artist Michael Kargl often works with (computer) systems that abstract or compose images. For this flag, he opened the image of the Heerlen coat of arms in an image processing programme and took the histogram from it. This histogram is an abstract image which shows the structure of the colour values. This operation questions and revalues the value of the original image and the abstraction. The image as in the representation of the coat of arms, but also the image as in the coat of arms of Heerlen with all its connotations and meanings.
Michael Kargl is a researcher and artist living in Vienna. From 2016 until 2020 he did his artistic research PhD on the topic of performative materiality at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. In the same period he was artistic researcher and co-leader of the project „originalcopy—Post-Digital Strategies of Appropriation“. He was co-founder and member of the collective CONT3XT.NET (2006-2012).
